What is topdressing and when should I do it?
Topdressing is applying a thin layer of quality soil, compost, or sand over your existing lawn to improve soil structure, level minor bumps, and promote thicker grass growth. In New Brunswick, the best time for topdressing is late August through early September when grass actively grows but temperatures are cooler.
Topdressing works by gradually improving your soil's organic matter content and filling in small depressions in your lawn. The material you spread gets worked down into the grass canopy through watering and natural settling, where it feeds soil microorganisms and provides a better growing environment for grass roots. Over time, regular topdressing can transform compacted clay soils common in the Fredericton and Saint John river valleys into healthier, more porous growing medium.
The best topdressing materials for New Brunswick lawns include screened compost, quality topsoil mixed with compost, or a sand-compost blend. Avoid using pure sand unless you have extremely heavy clay soil, as sand alone can create concrete-like conditions when mixed with clay. For most NB properties, a 50-50 mix of screened topsoil and compost works excellently. You'll need about 2-3 cubic yards to topdress 1,000 square feet with a quarter-inch layer.
Timing is crucial in our Maritime climate. Late August through early September provides warm soil for grass growth while avoiding the stress of July heat. The grass has time to grow through the topdressing material before winter dormancy. Spring topdressing (May) is also possible but less ideal since you're competing with spring growth spurts and potential washout from spring rains.
The application process starts with core aerating your lawn if it's compacted, then spreading the topdressing material evenly using a rake or specialized topdressing rake. Work it down into the grass with the back of the rake so grass blades poke through but aren't completely buried. Water lightly after application to help settling. You should still see grass blades after application – if the lawn looks completely covered, you've applied too much.
Topdressing works especially well when combined with overseeding, which is perfect timing for New Brunswick's August-September window. The topdressing material provides an ideal seedbed for new grass while improving conditions for existing turf. This combination can significantly thicken lawns damaged by winter snow mold or summer stress.
Consider hiring a professional for large lawns or if you need soil testing to determine the right topdressing blend for your specific soil conditions. Many New Brunswick landscapers offer topdressing as part of fall lawn renovation services, and they have access to quality screened materials and proper application equipment.
For smaller areas under 2,000 square feet, topdressing is definitely a DIY project that most homeowners can handle with a weekend's work and some rented equipment.
